Coronation Street star Peter Armitage has died aged 78.
Charlie Lawson – who plays Jim McDonald – shared the sad news on Twitter.
"It’s with great sadness, that I’ve to tell you my great old friend Pete Armitage has died. RIP mate," he wrote.
Simon Gregson, who plays Charlie’s on-screen son," echoed his thoughts, writing, "I loved Pete what a lovely man very sad RIP lovely man."
Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby) added, "So sorry to hear this, lovely man . Thoughts to family and friends."
No cause of death has yet been given, but Peter revealed four years ago that he was in remission from bowel cancer.
Peter first took on the role of Kevin Webster’s dad for a six-month stint in 1984.
He then returned to the ITV soap between 1995 and 1997, and did a third stint from 2006 to 2011.
He had hoped to return after getting the all-clear from cancer in 2014.
Opening up about his fight with the disease, he previously told The Mirror that his daughter Sally was the first person he confided in.
"When I was diagnosed with cancer the first person I phoned was my daughter Sally, who lives in Australia. I said to her, ‘Who do I tell, Sal?’ And she said, ‘Everybody.’ She explained that if I did that they could go through it with me and share the load," he said.
And while he managed not to panic when doctors found a tumour in his bowel during a colonoscopy, he broke down after learning it hadn’t metastasized.
"The only time I’ve cried was when they told me the cancer hadn’t spread. It was a relief, really, and also the enormity of what I’d been through had started to sink in," he said.
"I’m in remission and will have check-ups every six months for the next five years.
"I’ve put my life on hold for the past few months, but as soon as the ileostomy is reversed – hopefully next month – I’d like to get back to work again."
Peter also starred in the 1980s Yellow Pages commercial, and also counted The Befrienders, Couples, Jack the Ripper and Hearts and Minds amongst his TV credits.
He is survived by Sally and son Danny.
