The invite list to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘s wedding read like a Hollywood role call.

From George and Amal Clooney, to Idris Elba, the Beckhams and Elton John, the great and good of the showbiz world were all present and correct for the royal wedding of 2018.

And it appears those friendships are continuing to grow, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spotted holidaying with the Clooneys last week.

The foursome is said to have spent a long weekend together at actor George’s Lake Como retreat.

But it’s not just Harry and Meghan who have struck up a friendship with the A-list.

From Princess Diana’s love of a showbiz party, to Prince William’s friendship with Elton John, here’s the low-down on the hottest celeb-slash-royal friendships.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

Before meeting Harry in 2016, Meghan was a Hollywood actress so understandably formed bonds with various Tinseltown stars, many of whom attended her wedding in Windsor.

The former Suits star even calls tennis champ Serena Williams one of her ‘closest friends’, with the duo hitting it off at the Super Bowl in Miami back in 2010.

Meghan wrote on her now defunct blog The Tig: "She quickly became a confidante I would text when I was travelling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down-to-earth chick I was able to grab lunch with."

Meanwhile, Serena has been equally appreciative: "Her personality just shines. I told her, ‘You’ve got to be who you are, Meghan. You can’t hide.’"

The Los Angeles-born royal is also friends with Indian actress Priyanka Chopra, who attended her May wedding and is now engaged to toyboy fiance Nick Jonas.

She and Meghan met at the Elle Women in Television dinner in January 2016, with former Miss World Priyanka enthusing: "We bonded as actors. We just became friends, like two girls would. She’s a girl’s girl. She’s a really relatable young woman who is concerned about the world just like you and I are."

Meghan has also spoken highly of the Bollywood star, gushing: "Priyanka is unbelievable. She has become a really good friend."

Prince Harry

When it comes to famous friends, Prince Harry certainly had a sizeable collection.

When he tied the knot this spring, it was no surprise to see a host of celebrities joining the royals and aristocrats in the aisles of St George’s Chapel.

Among the guests were singer James Blunt, who served in the British Army with Harry.

The royal has also been seen at one of the pop star’s concerts and informally sent James a text invite to perform at the 2016 Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida.

Another royal wedding guest was soul singer Joss Stone, who has been friends with Harry and brother Prince William for over 10 years.

Speaking about the famous redhead, Joss has said: "He’s a fun human being. He’s quite sweet and soft though too."

Joss is so close with Harry and his sibling, she was also a guest at William and Kate’s 2011 wedding.

Meanwhile, actor Tom Hardy surprised many when he arrived at Harry and Meghan’s nuptials, after keeping their friendship on the down low.

The Mad Max star cameoed as a Stormtrooper along Harry and William in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and were also chatting at the Audi Polo Challenge in 2014 and 2016.

Questioned about his friendship with the royal, Tom told Esquire: "It’s deeply private. Harry is a f**king legend."

One famous friend who didn’t get an invite to the nuptials was supermodel Cara Delevingne .

Growing up in high society, Cara and Harry have mixed in the same circles, with her grandmother Janie Sheffield even serving as a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret.

Cara and Harry were pictured goofing around in a photobooth along with Margot Robbie in 2016. The Australian actress reveals Cara likes to jokingly "drunk text" Harry. Margot recalled: "I said, ‘We can’t prank-call royalty’, but anyway we did and he was so cool with it."

Another no-show at the Harry’s big day was former US President Barack Obama and wife Michelle, whose attendance would have been controversial given current President Donald Trump wasn’t invited.

When visiting London last year, Barack tweeted: "Good to see my friend Prince Harry in London to discuss the work of our foundations & offer condolences to victims of the Manchester attack."

Former Spice Girl Geri Horner wasn’t invited to the nuptials either, but has known the Prince since he was a child.

She said in 2014: "I met Prince Harry when he was about 10. I’ve seen him grow up and it’s brilliant what he’s done with his life – it’s all for a great cause. He’s shown people he cares and he’s got a great heart and spirit."

Prince William

The heir-to-the-throne shares many famous friends with his younger brother, including Joss, the Obamas, the Beckhams and Ellie Goulding .

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge asked Ellie to perform at their reception for their 2011 wedding, even singing for the couple’s first dance as husband and wife.

Speaking about Wills and Kate, Ellie gushed: "They’re just a really awesome couple, lovely people."

In 2016, she was romantically linked to Harry after the pair apparently shared a kiss as a polo match. They certainly looked friendly two years previously when they were photographed hugging at the 2014 Invictus Games closing ceremony where Ellie was performing.

Prince William has been pals with David Beckham since the pair worked on the London Olympic bid back in 2007.

The retired footballer and wife Victoria scored invites to both William and Harry’s respective weddings.

Speaking about the Princes, David enthused: "It’s a very normal relationship. They’re very easy to get along with. They love their sport."

Meanwhile, the Duke also went to Eton with Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne and they even played on the same rugby team.

In 2015, Eddie admitted "I haven’t seen him since school", but the old school chums were eventually reunited at a polo match a few months later and bonded over new fatherhood.

Princess Diana

The late Diana, Princess of Wales had a long list of famous friends, having met many at concerts and film premieres during her royal duties.

She became friends with Sir Elton John in 1981 after she wrote a "thank you" letter for performing at Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday party.

The pair had a rocky friendship and fell out a few times, but reconciled when close friend Gianni Versace was murdered, with Diana famously pictured comforting Elton at the designer’s funeral in 1997. However, just weeks later, Diana herself was dead, with Elton performing Candle In The Wind at her funeral.

Sir Elton has continued to be friends with Diana’s two sons and sang at Harry and Meghan’s wedding earlier this year.

Diana also formed a surprising relationship with Liza Minnelli after bonding at the 1991 premiere of the latter’s film Stepping Out.

Liza recalled: "I was lucky enough count Princess Di as a friend… We’d have lunch, just the two of us. I think she liked that. I certainly did. My instinct was to protect her. We talked about everything under the sun. She loved music."

She also grew close to one of Liza’s best mates, Michael Jackson after meeting backstage at his Bad tour at Wembley Stadium in 1988.

The pair used to enjoy late night phonecalls, with Michael saying in 2003: "We could relate to each other. We would cry on each other’s shoulders."

The Princess also bonded with another iconic pop star – Queen legend Freddie Mercury, even enjoying a wild night out at gay bar, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in the late 1980s.

Freddie’s close friend Cleo Rocos recalled in her 2013 memoir, The Power of Positive Drinking, that Diana disguised herself as a ‘male model’ in a military jacket, a hat, and sunglasses.

Cleo wrote: "Freddie told her we were going to the Vauxhall Tavern. Diana said she had never heard of it and she’d like to come. She wanted the thrill of going in undetected to order one drink and would leave right away, she promised."

She also made friends in Hollywood after taking up an offer of a bed from Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn after meeting at the 1991 premiere of Backdraft.

Kurt said he offered Diana a hideout at his Colorado ranch: "I said, ‘Come over to the ranch. We have a good long driveway and it’s hard for the paparazzi to get in there.’

"Years later Fergie (Sarah Ferguson), who Goldie knows, worked it out. I guess Diana wanted to come and stay with the boys and they were welcomed, so they came and stayed for 10 days at the ranch and had a great time."

Prince Charles

As next in line to the throne, Prince Charles keeps a rather tighter circle of friends which only a couple of celebrities have managed to permeate.

The Prince of Wales has been friends with Rod Stewart for many years, with the rocker serving as an ambassador for his charity, the Prince’s Trust.

Rod has performed at two royal birthday parties, including Charles’s 60th in 2008.

He also formed a surprising connection with late comedienne Joan Rivers, who attended Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2005 and also performed at his 60th bash.

According to comedienne Kathy Griffin, Joan frequently visited Charles on UK visits and affectionately called him "Chuck".

Princess Beatrice

Prince Andrew’s eldest daughter Princess Beatrice has been a regular on the London social scene for years, so it’s no surprise she has many famous people in her phonebook.

Among her more high-profile pals are Hollywood couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who she met through her ex-boyfriend Dave Clark.

Dave knew Ashton through his job as Head of External Affairs at Uber, where the actor is an investor.

The actors were pictured holidaying with Beatrice and Dave in St Tropez in 2013, before posing together for a selfie in an Uber in 2015.

However, as the couple split in 2016, it’s not known if Beatrice is still friendly with Mila and Ashton, who attended Dave’s wedding to Lynn Anderson in Italy this summer.

Like her cousins William and Harry, Beatrice is also pals with Ellie Goulding, recently holidaying with her and supermodel Karlie Kloss in the Wadi Ru desert in Jordan.

Beatrice has known Karlie since 2016 after they were pictured at Wimbledon together, with the model Facetiming Beatrice when she got engaged to boyfriend Joshua Kushner in July 2018.

Another famous friend for Beatrice is Holly Branson, with the royal and sister Eugenie attending her 2011 wedding on Necker Island.

Beatrice and Holly regularly take part in the charity fundraisers together, including the London Marathon in 2010 and climbing Mont Blanc together in 2012.

Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie shares many famous friends in common with her sister Beatrice and cousins William and Harry, such as Ellie Goulding, Holly Branson, Cara Delevingne and James Blunt.

The youngest York sister has been pictured watching a New York Knicks game with Ellie, as well as posing up together at various London social events.

In 2016, it was claimed Eugenie had accidentally cut Ed Sheeran’s cheek with a ceremonial sword during a mock-knighting at a boozy party.

However, mutual pal James Blunt clarified: "Ed was drunk, messing around, and he cut himself. We made a fancy story up; people fell for it. It was very embarrassing."

We’ll have to wait and see which celebrities score an invite to Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s wedding in October.
