The forest department, Pune division, which had failed to check indiscriminate dumping of garbage on its plot near the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre on Park road, has decided to seek help of the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB), to keep the area clean.
When asked about the failure to maintain the three hectare plot clean, DA Pawar, range forest officer, said, “Actually, our proposal to build 30 rest houses for the department has been sent to the state government. Soon construction work will start and the plot won’t remain vacant. Till then, we have planned to fence the entire plot to avoid open littering.”
Pawar assured that the plot would be cleaned with the help of KCB and the social forestry department staff.
The empty plot near the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre on Park road carries a board stating: “This plot (Survey Number 73 A and 32) is owned and maintained by forest department. No one is allowed to enter or use of this land other than forest purpose.”
However, there was no evidence of any maintenance work done by the forest department. Instead, the entire plot was being used for dumping garbage by people and vendors in the neighbourhood.
The empty plot of forest department had heaps of plastic trash, bottles, and household garbage. People from the Paraplegic Centre alleged that residents were mainly responsible for dumping the waste openly.
KCB’s health superintendent, BS Naik, said,“Actually that plot is entirely maintained and managed by the state forest department, so we do not have any jurisdiction over it. If they are seeking our help, we are ready to work with them to keep the entire area clean. In fact, they can also charge a fine for open garbage littering.”
