The disaster relief teams of the Southern Naval Command (SNC) have swung into action to assist people stranded in the Kuttanad region. The relief teams, comprising 30 personnel, reached the low-lying areas of Kuttanad in Alappuzha and Kottayam. Over 37,000 people are believed to be stranded in the region following the heavy downpour a week ago, an official release said.

The team of divers in five inflatable boats from the Navy were deployed for the relief operations after the District Collector of Alappuzha sought assistance of the Southern Naval Command.

The Navy team cleared the clogged waterways and created outlet for the floodwaters, the release added.
