The big-serving Sarth Bansode made the most of size and strength superiority to overpower the second-seed Aditya Rai 4-1, 4-2 in the final to win the under-14 title at the first leg of PMDTA-KPIT junior champion series tennis tournament at the Maharashtriya Mandal Lawn Tennis Academy Tennis Courts, Mukundnagar on Wednesday.
Knowing his opponent enjoyed controlling the net court, Bansode opted to keep him glued to the baseline, playing a rather safer game. Rai, being the aggressor of the two, stuck to his philosophy of attacking everything that came his way, but the plan completely backfired, to the disappointment of the second-seed.
Bansode’s quick first serves and relatively pacey second serves gave Rai all sorts of problems throughout the course of the game. Throughout the entire first set, Rai could count the number of points he won his opponent’s serve on his fingers as he couldn’t deal with the pace and the bounce of the clay court.
Throughout the tournament, the second-seed served exceptionally well, but in the final, he made a number of double faults through both sets which brought down his confidence.
The 14-year-old Bansode noticed that Rai’s intensity dropped and quickly broke him in the third game of the second set, before holding his serve until the final game before serving out the championship.
In the under-14 girls final, top seed Kaushikee Samantha and sixth-seed Aleena Shaikh played out a three-set thriller before the former emerged victorious by a 4-1, 1-4, 5-4(7-5) scoreline.
Arjun Kirtane won the under-12 boys event, registering a 4-1, 4-1 over Prithviraj Hiremath while Shravani Deshmukh beat Ritika More 4-1, 4-0 to win in the girls’ category.
