Battery-operated vehicles have been inducted into solid waste management exercise fleet of Thanjavur Corporation.

In the first phase, 30 such ‘green vehicles’ have been bought by the Corporation under the smart city project.

The vehicles, having a capacity to carry up to 750 kg, will be used to collect garbage and other solid waste from households and other commercial establishments in the town. The collected solid waste will be transported to multi-purpose waste segregation centers to be set up at 14 places under the civic body, official sources said.

Each vehicle can be operated for about eight hours upon charging of the batteries for about five hours and have a maximum speed limit of 70 km/hr. Additional e-vehicles will be purchased in phases to make the town clean and green, said Commissioner Jhansi.
