The Karnataka High Court on Thursday restrained the Karnataka Government Secretariat (KGS) Club from constructing a swimming pool or any other structure in the building, which is situated inside Cubbon Park.

A division bench comprising Justice John Michael Cunha and Justice H.T. Narendra Prasad passed the interim order on a PIL petition filed by city-based advocate Niyazuddin M.K.

The petitioner claimed that the swimming pool is being constructed in violation of a law that bars any construction in the Cubbon Park area. The swimming pool is being constructed based on a promise made by some of the office-bearers of the club at the time of elections last year. The petitioner has also alleged that the club is operating on government property though the lease on the premises had expired in 1997.
