BJP candidate tells workers to stay alert to Deve Gowda’s strategies

Former Minister A. Manju, who recently joined the BJP to become its candidate for the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, said that he had made up his mind to join the BJP six months ago.

Addressing BJP workers here on Saturday, he said he had no intention to contest if JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda entered the fray.

“However, I was sure that Mr. Deve Gowda would not be allowed to contest in Hassan this time. I took the membership of the BJP only after he declared his grandson as the candidate,” he said.

Alleging that Mr. Deve Gowda changed his statements according to the situation, Mr. Manju urged workers to be alert to his [Mr. Deve Gowda’s] strategies at the time of elections.

“Recently, Mr. Deve Gowda said he was interested in appointing M. Mallikarjun Kharge as Chief Minister of the coalition government. Earlier, Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna shed crocodile tears over the change in the portfolio of G. Parameshwara. However, the JD(S) has not appointed any of its Dalit MLAs as a Minister. H.K. Kumaraswamy of Sakleshpur is the seniormost MLA in the district. He has not been made a Minister,” he remarked.

Mr. Manju said though the Congress and the JD(S) agreed to field a consensus candidate for Hassan, workers of both parties could not work together.

“The leaders might join hands, but not the workers. Hundreds of Congress workers have suffered a lot under the leadership of the JD(S). Many have been facing criminal cases. How can they work for the victory of a JD(S) candidate?” he asked.
