Thousands of devotees witnessed the car festival as part of the week-long ‘Aani’ celebrations of Nellaiappar Gandhimathi Amman Temple here on Sunday.

A large number of devotees from far and near had assembled near the temple at 4 a.m. The temple car, carrying the presiding deities – Lord Nellaiappar and Goddess Gandhimathi, were taken around the car streets at 8.45 a.m.

The Aani festival had started with flag-hoisting on July 6. Every day since the start of the festival, processions of the deities and special rituals and cultural events took place.

Pulling the car along with the devotees, Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Sathish participated in the event. MP Vijila Sathyananth, MLA A.L.S. Lakshmanan, District Revenue Officer P. Muthuramalingam, Sub-Collector Manish Narnaware, Commissioner of Police N. Bhaskaran, Corporation Commissioner P. Vijayalakshmi, HR&CE Joint Commissioner Paranjothi, Assistant Commissioner Rohini and other officials also participated.

Apart from routine surveillance, CCTV cameras and drones were used for security. Over 1,500 police personnel were deployed for crowd control.

Various service organisations had arranged for distribution of buttermilk and annadanam.
