A goods carrier driver was arrested on a charge of assaulting and biting an Inspector of Police (traffic) after the latter stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation at Kenikarai junction here.
A traffic police team, led by Vijayakanth, Inspector of Police, was regulating traffic at the junction on Wednesday afternoon when the driver, identified as Karnan alias Mariappan, 52, from Thuthivalasai near Uchipuli assaulted the police officer after picking up a wordy duel.
Police said when Mr. Vijayakanth stopped the firewood-laden van for overloading, the driver after ignoring his warning, stopped the vehicle at a distance. When the police officer pulled up the driver for not immediately stopping the vehicle and took away the key, the driver entered into a wordy duel with him.
When the enraged police officer hit and pushed him down, the driver retaliated and pushed down the Inspector. After pushing the Inspector, he pinned him down and bit his neck. Fellow policemen and general public rescued him. The Inspector was admitted to Government Headquarters Hospital here and doctors gave six stitches to close the bite wound. The Bazaar police registered a case and booked the driver under Sections 294 b (uttering obscene words), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging duty) and 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code. He was produced before a magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody, police said.
