Brandy’s been a beloved role model since she stepped onto the music scene in the early ’90s.
But when asked how she is able to sustain and love herself, the singer and actress made a startling admission.
“I didn’t love myself when I was in my so-called prime,” she told Essence. “I used to think my life was a gift and a curse. But then as the years went by and I went through more crazy things and really on a search for God, I finally found my way. But I didn’t find my way until recently — at 39 and now 40.”
Over the last couple of years, Brandy has stayed busy with her work on the Fox series “Star” and the BET series “Zoe Ever After.”
She’s also had some dark moments.
In 2017, Brandy engaged in a very public feud with Monica on Whitney Houston’s birthday.
Earlier that year, she was rushed to a hospital after falling unconscious on a flight. She blamed the issue on stress and travel.
And the year before that she sued her record label over the right to record new music.
Today, she’s looking ahead with several projects in the works, and also says, “I want to play myself.”
“If I can’t play myself and tell my own story, how can I play Eartha Kitt,” she said. “I need to do what I’m about to do because of the higher work that I’m about to do.”
