Jeremy Clarkson’s former Top Gear pals want him to be a “car crash” as presenter of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, he claims.
The host, who returns with the show tomorrow night, said Richard Hammond and James May had also given frank advice.
Jeremy said: “Hammond did watch the last series. He said he was very sad as he’d hoped I’d make a complete mess of it. He said he was begging in his mind for a car crash.”
Asked if they had given tips, he said: “They have, actually: ‘Get a hearing aid and some glasses, you old idiot’.”
Jeremy joked he had been kinder to the contestants for the latest run. He said: “I’m told I’ve been nicer to the contestants, but last year there were some very stupid contestants who didn’t warrant any niceness.”
Chris Tarrant presented the show from 1998 to 2014. Since its debut, international versions of the game show have appeared in around 160 countries worldwide.
Bosses on ITV’s revamped game show, which Jeremy began hosting in 2018, have beefed up security, sending guards to the homes of “phone a friend” helpers.
Producer Fiona Clark said: “With the advance of Google, smartphones and tablets, security around the lifeline phone a friend needed to grow… to ensure fair play.”
