Strictly Come Dancing star Katya Jones and Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty made their dance floor debut on Saturday night. The new pairing placed second on the leaderboard in the very first week after impressing the judges with their routine.

Katya and Adam performed a Cha Cha Cha to the track Beggin’ by Måneskin.

They were awarded a total of 30 points by Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke, second only to TV presenter AJ Odudu and new pro Kai Widdrington.

The 32-year-old pro is on a mission to lift the Glitterball trophy once again, after winning the dancing contest in 2017 with Holby City actor Joe McFadden.

Luckily for Katya, her partner Adam, 26, is an Olympic athlete and is no stranger to competition, meaning his eyes are also on the prize.

However, former pro Kristina Rihanoff, who danced on the show from 2008 to 2015, has warned that the duo’s mutual competitiveness could work against them.

Ahead of the launch show, she said of the couple: “I think it’s the best pairing ever because they definitely – personality wise – click.

“I mean it can go against them too. If they are going to be that competitive and maybe perhaps push each other,” she went on to warn of their competitive traits.

“But I think there is a lot of pressure on Adam to deliver, you know to be good, and I think sportsmen always do well because they just know how to train,” the 44-year-old added, during an appearance on Saturday’s BBC Breakfast.

This year’s Strictly has already faced a number of setbacks and dramas amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Firstly, a pro tested positive for COVID-19 before the show even launched.

It was then reported that three unnamed professional dancers did not want to have the Covid vaccination, which caused some concern on set, according to sources.

And then, last night, it was announced that McFly star Tom Fletcher and his partner Amy Dowden had both tested positive for the virus.

They will have to sit out next week’s contest.

The BBC released a statement, which read: “Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden have tested positive for Covid-19.

“The pair are now self-isolating separately following the latest government guidelines.

“While they will both miss Saturday’s live show, Strictly Come Dancing protocols mean that all being well, they will return the following week.”

Fortunately, Amy reassured fans that she was doing well and not suffering any symptoms when she took to social media last night.

Of her isolation period, the 31-year-old wrote: “I have no doubt that over the next 10 days my mind will be going crazy with choreography ideas ready to get back on the Strictly dance floor for the live show in week 3!

“Thank you for all of the support and good luck to all of the couples this week. I will be cheering you all on! @bbcstrictly,” she added, in view of her 249,000 followers.

Tom, who is currently on tour with his band, had to pull out of their latest gig in Glasgow.

“I’m so sorry,” he said in an Instagram update.
