Lisa Riley’s Emmerdale alter ego Mandy Dingle has been seen dealing with a tragic miscarriage. The actress has now said she is “elated” to be shining a light on the topic of infertility in the ITV soap.
People treat you differently
In a new interview, the 44-year-old reflected on the plot after her own IVF didn’t work.
The soap favourite gave up on the fertility treatment last year, saying “it is just not meant to be”.
Lisa said despite the news, she and her long-term partner Al are “very happy”.
Her other half propsed back in May 2018, after they met six year prior.
When asked about having children in light of the Emmerdale plot, she said she’s “elated” to be a part of it.
“It’s opened a massive door for me as well…” Lisa started.
She continued: “I’ve spoken openly in my own personal life, where my IVF didn’t work and people treat you differently.
“It’s like, ‘Oh and are you okay with that?’… I’m very happy that in my own personal life.”
The star went on: “I have a family, my niece, my two beautiful nephews are a huge part of my life – so yeah I don’t have a child of my own, but I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.”
This time last year, Lisa gave a heartbreaking IVF update, again referencing her wider family.
She told The Mirror: “Theirs is the family I wanted – but I can’t have. It is just not meant to be.
“But since being back at Emmerdale I have heard so many positive stories about people who tried IVF and it didn’t work, but then fell pregnant naturally.”

Lisa then said: “”I wouldn’t go down the IVF route now but I will let nature take its course and, if I did fall pregnant, I would be thrilled. But I am not going to dwell on it.
“No one is going to give me bad news again.”
She was told by medical experts that it is unlikely she will ever conceive even via IVF, due to the poor quality of her eggs.
In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child.
Meanwhile, during her latest chat with the Digital Spy Soap Scoop podcast, she also discussed the public’s reaction to the infertility storyline.
Lisa added: “If you’d have seen my social media when the lockdown episode happened. Inundated is not a big enough word.
“Just girls that were like 26-years-old, who had had hysterectomies and just to say thank you to Emmerdale for bringing it to the forefront.
“We are going to re-visit the infertility because obviously Paul has no idea that Mandy was pregnant all those years ago with his baby.”
