It's an age-old question…. can men and women ever truly be friends?

And it was the hot topic of debate on Good Morning Britain this morning with Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins opening up the conversation with two reality show stars.

Both Love Island's Zara Lackenby-Brown and Gogglebox's Tom Malone joined the hosts for a lighthearted chat on the subject, with both offering differing points of view.

Zara believed that they can't, declaring that "all of my close male friendships in the past have tried it on with me."

Tom, however, felt differently, insisting that his dancing career, involving mostly women, meant that he has had plenty of platonic friendships with the opposite sex.

It was Zara's comments in particular that riled GMB viewers, with many shocked at her attitude.

One said: "I wonder if she gets a lot of attention because she’s just an attention seeker that’s desperate to be on TV."

Another laughed with an emoji and said: "'I'm gorgeous so why wouldn't any bloke fancy me!?'" with another quipping, "Soon she'll have to stay in for fear of men just falling at her feet in the streets!" mocking Zara's opinion.

Plenty more followed including slating for the show with many questioning GMB on their "slow news day" and questioned, "Can TV news shows ever report some news?"

The pair, who admitted they were both single, were then fair game for a jovial Ben Shephard, who proceeded to play cupid and attempted to matchmake the pair.

Gogglebox fave, Tom, split from his girlfriend, Bryony Briscoe at the start of the year after dating since 2020 and moving in together in Leeds. The star revealed that he was moving back to Manchester and the pair unfollowed one another on Instagram.

Love Island bombshell Zara was recently in a two-week relationship with former Love Island star, Jordan, who was also brought into the winter series as a bombshell. Their paths didn't cross within the show, with Zara dumped from the island the day before Jordan arrived, but sparks flew on the outside – for a short period of time.

Since then, the star has been enjoying single life.

Host Ben will no doubt understand the pressure that Zara might feel after reading the comments though, with him admitting that he had to block fans from leaving nasty comments on his social media after suffering horrific trolling at the end of last year.

The presenter, 47, said people would be “amazed” at the vile comments he has been subjected to throughout his on-screen career, with trolls trying to get a rise out of him.

Speaking to OK!, Ben said: “Social media can be an incredibly important tool for debate but what I don’t need is the mindless horrific vile abuse from people.

“You’d be amazed – people just want to get a reaction out of me, so I’ve changed my settings on my social media. I just want to be drawn to positivity and optimism and hope.”
