The Prince of Wales marked his grandson Archie Mountbatten-Windsor's second birthday with a heartfelt birthday tribute on Instagram.

In a poignant throwback image shared by Clarence House on Thursday, Prince Charles is seen looking affectionately at the youngster while he's cradled by his father Prince Harry as a young baby.

"Happy birthday to Archie, who turns two today,' the caption reads.

The caption – a joint tribute with Charles' wife, the Duchess of Cornwall – also features a birthday cake emoji.

While Archie is now two, the Prince hasn't seen him in person for more than a year.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to California after stepping down from Royal duties in March 2020.

Meanwhile, little Archie has also received birthday love from Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Despite the distance between them, William, 38, and Kate, 39, shared a family photo from Archie's christening in July 2019.

Posting to their 2.2million Twitter followers, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared a family photo from Archie's christening in July 2019.

They wrote alongside the image: "Wishing Archie a very happy 2nd birthday today," alongside a pair of emojis depicting a balloon and a cake.

The Queen had previously wished Archie a happy birthday, sending a short but sweet message to her 10million Instagram followers.

Her Majesty's tribute stood alongside an image of Harry and Meghan introducing their first child to the world two years ago.

The caption reads: "Wishing Archie Mountbatten-Windsor a very happy 2nd birthday today," alongside a red balloon emoji.

It is believed that Archie will enjoy a virtual play date with his cousins — William and Kate's children — Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three, on his big day.

Archie, who is set to become a big brother any time now, will most likely spent the rest of his day at his hillside estate in Montecito, near Santa Barbara, with Meghan's mum Doria Ragland and close friend Katharine McPhee popping in.
