Russell Crowe has shared his heartbreak after his beloved puppy Louis died in his arms following a tragic accident.

The 58 year old actor took to Twitter on Thursday to sharing the devastating news, revealing Louis had been hit by a truck and passed away before he got to a vet.

Posting a snap of the adorable pooch, Russell sadly penned: "This is Louis the Papillion. 16 months old. Tiny, cheeky, brave. He won my heart."

He added: "Unfortunately today, on the second anniversary of my fathers passing, Louis was hit by a truck. We tried to get him to the vet, but he died in my arms while I was telling him how much we loved him."

Dozens of fellow celebs and fans flocked to share their condolences, with many wishing Russell well at such a difficult time.

Actor Vincent D'Onofrio wrote: "So sorry to hear this Russel. My heart goes out to you."

Singer Janet Devlin tweeted: "My condolences he was such a special little guy! Sending all my love x," while musician Ben Lee added: "So sorry mate. Sending love."

One of the actor's fans wrote: "A sudden death but full of your love in his heart. Beautiful little furry man," and a second added: "I'm so sorry for your loss. He's beautiful. How heartbreaking. He loved you too!"

A third person said: "All my sympathies. I still well up when I think of when we lost our last pet."

Hours after announcing his dog's death, Russell appeared on The Kyle and Jackie O show on KIIS radio and struggled to hold back his tears as he discussed Louis.

The hosts of the hit radio show, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, offered Russell their condolences before Kyle checked on the actor to see how he was doing.

"Are you alright? Is everything alright there?" Kyle asked.

"No, we're actually a little devastated," Russell responded with tears in his eyes.

"He was such a beautiful little pup you know and kind of wrapped us around him and shaped our lives around him. So it's gonna take a little time to get past."

Louis passed away on 30 March, which was also the two year anniversary of the death of Russell's father, John Alexander Crowe. Gladiator star John died at his home in Coffs Harbour, Australia, in 2021 at the age of 85.
