Shakira and Gerard Piqué were in an "open relationship for years" prior to their split, it has been claimed.

The estranged couple parted ways last year after eleven years and two children together, as Shakira, 46, later suggested that footballer Gerard, 36, had been unfaithful to her, when she talked about 'betrayal' – which he denies.

He is now in a relationship with Clara Chia Marti, 24, and Shakira has not held back on her opinions of the relationship – as she lashed out with some cutting lyrics in her recent song, Sessions.

Gerard was said to have been shocked that Hips Don't Lie singer Shakira went ahead and announced that they'd split, via a statement on social media.

Spanish broadcaster José Antonio Avilés has now claimed that the former couple were in an "open relationship" for three years before Shakira announced the breakup.

Avilés claimed: "There is an agreement where 'you do what you want and I do what I want', but in the face of the media we are still a couple."

The broadcaster added that Gerard was "annoyed to find out from the press".

Meanwhile, fellow broadcaster Pilar Vidal added: "Pique does not want speculation that the reason for the breakup was infidelity.

"He was surprised by the statement because the one who takes the initiative is her."

OK! has contacted Shakira and Gerard's reps for comment.

Shakira said in her split statement: "We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding."

She later claimed that Gerard had 'betrayed' her, whilst her father was in hospital in ICU.

Speaking to People en Español, she said: "Everything happened at once, my home was falling apart.

"I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU."

The pair never tied the knot, despite their previously long-standing relationship, with Gerard saying the decision was down to Shakira's "mentality".

He told Gary Neville on an episode of The Overlap: "No, I'm not married. It's her mentality. I like it how we are right now. We have two kids, nine and seven right now. We work good as a couple."

Meanwhile, since their split, Shakira is rumoured to have grown close to British F1 racing star, Lewis Hamilton, as the pair were spotted looking cosy at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Shakira attended the nail biting event in Barcelona, before stepping out with Lewis to enjoy a meal after he had only narrowly missed out on the win to Max Verstappen.

But while the meal could easily have been dismissed as a friendly get-together, the duo once again met up later in the week, when Lewis was spotted picking up Shakira in a speedboat outside her Miami home.
