Post lockdown, we saw government allowing the cinema halls to re-open with 50 per cent capacity in the unlock phase. And the first fresh release was Abhishek Sharma’s Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, which features the ensemble cast of Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Annu Kapoor, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Manoj Pahwa and Seema Pahwa. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the film was released in only around 700 screens and as per our sources, it has managed to collect approximately Rs 2.40 crore in its first five days at the ticket windows. Looking at the current scenario, we are expecting it end its first week around Rs 2.65 crore.

Diljit Dosanjh, who learnt Marathi for this film recently said, “The things that a man must do for love! My character had to learn Marathi for his lady love and I had to for the love for my film. It’s the kind of movie that’s so seeped in innocence that you want to work towards making it better. My character speaks Marathi quite a few times in the film. He is a Bombay boy, so it’s a part of his lingo.” He added, “Picking up a new language is always difficult but that was a requirement in this film. It felt authentic. So when my character had to woo Fatima’s character, he used these adorable Marathi lines. Those scenes are kinda heartwarming. It was such a joy to see the work you’ve put in come alive on screen. It’s the kind of simple, uncomplicated love that we don’t celebrate enough anymore.”

Talking about the reviews, our critic Urmimala Banerjee gave the film 2.5 stars and wrote, “Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari has a nice premise and could have been a riot. Sadly, the writers do not tap into the talent that they have at their disposal. Nevertheless, it is enjoyable for the greater part.” So, have you watched the film?
