As many as 13 shops that were functioning around Eswaran temple and Perumal temple in Kottai area were removed recently.
Following the fire at Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had asked the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR and CE) officials to remove shops functioning on the temple premises in the State.
The shopkeepers were asked to remove the stalls by June 30. However, they refused.

However, shopkeepers removed the shops by themselves. The aggrieved shopkeepers said that they had been running the business of selling garlands and puja items for the last 50 years. They demanded alternative space for running their shops so that their livelihood was not affected.
