A mini bus carrying 23 tourists from Gudiyatham in Vellore district, crashed near the 12th hairpin bend at Marapallam in Coonoor on Sunday, causing injuries to 22 persons.

Police officials said that the bus was headed to Udhagamandalam town when the driver of the vehicle lost control around a tricky bend, which led to the bus crashing onto its side. Traffic along the route came to a standstill for around an hour as officials tried to first rescue all the passengers and then get the bus upright.

Officials from the Health Department said that of the 22 persons who sustained injuries, six suffered moderate injuries. The six persons were identified as Vishnu Ram, 40, Muthu Kumaran, 39, Samanullah, 23, Gokulam, 30, Madhavan, 38 and Ramesh Babu, 48.

Some of the men had suffered head injuries as well as injuries to their spine and pelvis, doctors said, and one of them had been referred to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.

This is the second accident at Marapallam in as many days, officials said.
