In three separate incidents on the Central Railway, three train commuters lost their lives at Thane and Mumbra stations on Monday morning.

While two of them were railway track accidents, the third took place on the platform, the Thane Government Railway Police (GRP) said.

The first incident took place around 7am when the victim, Ajit Anand Puranik, 59, was standing on platform no. 4 at Thane station to board a CSMT local. “As it was peak hour, there was a huge crowd of officegoers on the platform. Many passengers leap into the local train before it halts, as it is pulling into the platform, to catch a seat. Puranik was also trying to do that, but he lost his balance, went through the gap, fell on the tracks and got stuck under the moving train,” said a police official from Thane GRP, who did not wish to be named.

The other two victims died while crossing tracks. “A 50-year-old man died on the tracks on the trans-harbour line around 1.40 am on Monday, while in other track accident, a 35-year-old man was hit by a train while crossing the fast track near Parsik tunnel at Mumbra station,” the police official added.

All three bodies have been shifted to Thane Civil Hospital, and the police are working to identify the two track death victims.
