“Manipal Obstetrics and Gynaecology Resident Conference and Dr. A. Padma Rao Memorial Postgraduate Update and Oration” were held on Saturday and Sunday at the Kasturba Medical College here.

The Dr. A. Padma Rao Endowment Oration was delivered by Krishnendu Gupta, Professor and Head, Department of OBG, Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences, Kolkata.

An alumnus of MAHE, he spoke on, “Preterm Prelabour Rupture of Membranes”.

The Oration Plaque and Citation were given away by the chief guest H. Vinod Bhat, Vice-Chancellor MAHE, and A. Krishna Rao.

In the Resident Conference, 56 post-graduate residents presented their research work. Didactic sessions addressed different aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Muralidhar V. Pai, Professor and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, KMC, Manipal, and chairman of the organising committee, welcomed the delegates and guests and explained the background of the conference and oration.

Dr. Vinod Bhat spoke on the importance of bringing down maternal and perinatal mortality and the contribution of Dr. A Padma Rao towards that end. He said that maternal and perinatal mortality rates in Udupi district are comparable with international standards due to the innovative RMCH centres started by Dr. Padma Rao and her legacy being continued by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at KMC, Manipal.

Speaking on the occasion, Dean of KMC Pragna Rao stressed on the need for quality research and presentations on communication skills among residents.

Pratap Kumar and Subha Gita also spoke on Dr. Padma Rao. Dr. Pragna Rao and Chiranjay Mukhopadhyay, Associate Dean, KMC, Manipal, distributed prizes to winners of paper and poster competitions. Akhila Vasudeva proposed a vote of thanks.
