Within 12 hours of the abduction of a businessman by a gang of history-sheeters, the police rescued him.
The gang, which posed as policemen, was nabbed from Red Hills. The gang members included Rowdy Sakthi alias Vadakarai Sakthi.
According to the police, Ganesan, who runs a transport business and is a resident of Karikalan Nagar, Red Hills, was at home on July 2. Around 8.30 p.m, a few persons accompanied by a man in police uniform came to his house. They told him to accompany them in connection with a case and took him away in a car. Some of his relatives tried to call him, but his phone was switched off.
On July 3, Ramachandran, Ganesan’s relative, received a call demanding a ransom of Rs. 25 lakh for his release. He lodged a complaint with the Red Hills police station around 10 a.m. A case was registered.
Police Commissioner A.K. Vishwanathan then formed a special team headed by Prem Anand Sinha, Joint Commissioner of Police, North Zone, and C. Kalaichelvan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Madhavaram district.
The special team analysed CCTV footage and cellphone locations. Vehicle checks were conducted in Vandalur, Guduvancherry, Puzhal, Red Hills and adjoining places.
Meanwhile, the kidnappers directed Ramachandran to bring the ransom to a place near Vandalur.
When the money was being exchanged, the police nabbed the gang. Those arrested were identified as Siva, Suman, Madhankumar, Ganesh, Ashok, Rajesh, Sathishkumar and Sakthi.
Two sickles, police uniforms, and two cars were seized. Further investigation is on. Sakthi is involved in 13 cases including a murder case and three cases of attempt to murder, police said.
