Absence of Ministers when the Legislative Assembly met on Wednesday riled the Opposition BJP while Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar took the matter with the governing combine Janata Dal (Secular)–Congress seriously.

An upset Speaker, noticing the absence of Ministers, asked the assigned Ministers to be present within 15 minutes. Of the 13 Ministers assigned to the Legislative Assembly, only six were present. Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, Cooperation Minister Bandeppa Kashempur, Minor Irrigation Minister C.S. Puttaraju, Health Minister Shivananda Patil, Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge, and Horticulture Minister M.C. Managuli were present when the House started its proceedings.

“I will give 15 minutes. They (absentees) should be in the House. Otherwise, I will take the matter seriously. I will not tolerate this,” Mr. Ramesh Kumar said. “Consider the House seriously and do not take it for granted,” he advised.

BJP member J. Madhuswamy also raised the issue and asked if they should speak to the Chair or speak to the Ministers. “Apart from Ministers, officials have also not come. They should also be called,” he added. Mr. Ramesh Kumar said the Ministers who are present in the House would convey messages to the respective Ministers.

In a lighter vein, the Speaker sought the presence of Food and Civil Supplies Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan and Urban Development Minister U.T. Khader since he liked to see them in their seats. When Mr. Ramesh Kumar took objection to the absence of Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Mr. Madhuswamy said he was away in Turuvekere, to which the Speaker said the Minister had not taken his permission.

The other Ministers who were not in the House were Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna, Tourism Minister S.R. Mahesh, Animal Husbandry Minister Venkat Rao Nadagouda, and Minister for Municipalities and Local Bodies Ramesh Jarkiholi.

Mr. Ramesh Kumar also warned those members who sign the register and not participate in the proceedings.

I will give 15 minutes. They (absentees) should be in the House. Otherwise, I will take the matter seriously. I will not tolerate this.
