The State government is exploring the possibility of providing alternative employment to workers and employees working in Tummalapala sugar factory at Anakapalle. Instead of reviving the factory, the government has been focussing on alternative opportunities. At a meeting on Wednesday, the officials briefed Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu about the hurdles and problems associated with reopening of the sugar factory. Crushing was stopped three years ago in the factory for various reasons, including insufficient sugarcane and obsolete machinery at the factory, which was established in 1956. As much as 1.36 lakh metric tonnes of sugarcane is required for the factory, but, only 30,000 MT is produced in Anakapalle.

The farmers were selling that produce to the Tandava, Etikoppaka, EID Sugar factories.

Subsequently, the factory was shut down.
