As a precautionary measure, Tiruchi City Corporation has begun erecting iron barricades at bathing ghats along the Cauvery.
Thillainayagam bathing ghat and Odathurai on the right bank of the Cauvery, which are said to be the most crowded bathing ghats, next only to Ammamandapam, will have barricades.
The decision was taken after a field inspection carried out by Collector K. Rajamani on steps taken to prevent drowning incidents in view of the heavy flow in the Cauvery.
Commissioner N. Ravichandran said erection of barricades was aimed at safeguarding the people bathing in the river. However, sufficient space had been given to bathers. A sum of Rs. 6 lakh had been earmarked for the purpose and the work would be completed within a few days.
Also, warning boards had been put up at various spots along the Cauvery, asking the people to exercise maximum care while entering the river.
A few more steps would be taken at Amma Mandapam before Adi Perukku.
