A 26-year-old motorcyclist was injured when an almond tree came crashing down in Thane’s Panchpakhadi area on Monday. Prashant Dhabale suffered a back injury in the incident that took place at 2.15 p.m. Mr. Dhabale was rushed to Kaushalya Hospital by Rajesh More, a passerby.
Mr. Dhabale, a resident of Saket and employee at Thane Municipal Transport, was heading to an ATM with a friend when the tree collapsed. His friend escaped unhurt. Mr. More said, “The trees in this area were reportedly pruned recently in the wake of heavy rains. Better trimming of trees is required.”
The Disaster Management Department cleared the tree and it was hauled away by the Thane Tree Authority and the Garden Department. Santosh Kadam, an official at the Disaster Management Department, said, “The trees are being trimmed, but we are facing protests from residents. Due to strong winds and heavy rains this monsoon, trees are falling across the city.”
Last year, advocate Kishore Pawar (38) died in the same ward after a tree fell on him. Following the incident, officials had ordered all trees in the area to be inspected.
