Boat jetties in Kuttanad are all set to get a major makeover. According to officials, Rs. 8 crore has been sanctioned for the modernisation of various jetties.
In the first phase, seven jetties will be renovated. This includes Palli jetty, Puthenkalam jetty and Akshara jetty in Kainakary panchayat, Paryath jetty in Nedumudi panchayat, Konthayad jetty, TK jetty and Nalanda jetty in Pulinkunnu. “As many as 20 boat jetties will be renovated in different phases. The jetties that needed urgent attention were selected for the first phase. Rest of the jetties will be modernised in a time-bound manner,” said an official.
People living in backwater areas in the district largely depend on boats operated by the Kerala State Water Transport Department for travelling purposes.
However, most of the passenger terminals in the region remain in a dilapidated state with few amenities.
Thomas Chandy, MLA, had earlier promised to take steps to renovate and improve facilities at all jetties in Kuttanad.
