The managing committee of the Bowring Institute on St. Mark’s Road will on Tuesday hear the version of its member Avinash Amarlal Kukreja about the huge stash of currency, jewels and property papers found in lockers operated by him.
Institutes sources said that a show cause notice has already been issued to Mr. Kukreja as to why action should not be taken, including expelling him from the club, over the incident, and the notice has asked him to appear before the managing committee on Tuesday.
A show cause notice was issued to him for misusing the privileges extended to members, embarrassing the club and causing serious security breach.
Recently, when the club’s authorities broke opened unauthorised lockers, they found six bags in three lockers that contained cash and jewels worth several crores, besides documents pertaining to land, promissory notes and signed blank cheques, following which income tax officials started an investigation.
“In case, he does not appear before the committee on Tuesday, he will be given another opportunity. The principle of natural justice has to be followed. There are set procedures in the club,” sources said.
Explaining the procedure, sources said that after he appears before the 13-member managing committee, the matter will be placed before the 5-member disciplinary committee, which will include two members from the managing committee and three senior members of the club.
“After the committees, the club will present the case before the general body, which will decide on the fate of the member,” sources said.
