The Mayurbhanj police has submitted a chargesheet in a court here in the rape and murder case of a tribal girl within 17 days of the crime.

This is for the first time in the district that a chargesheet was filed by the police within 17 days, Mayurbhanj SP Awinash Kumar said on Wednesday. The case was pursued speedily by the police for a speedy trial, he said.

The chargesheet was filed in the court of the Additional District Judge-cum-Special Judge (Child Protection Officer) on Tuesday.

A nine-year-old tribal girl of a village under Betnoti police station area, was kidnapped on June 15 allegedly by the accused. Her body was recovered from a forest near the village the next day, Mr. Kumar said.

The post-mortem examination had revealed that the girl was strangulated to death after rape, he added.

Mr. Kumar said the accused had a criminal record and was arrested in another rape case on August 2015 by the police. He was released on bail some days before the June 15-incident, he said. A compensation of Rs. 5 lakh was given to the victim’s family from the CM’s Relief Fund, he added.
