S.K. Bellubbi, former Minister, said that he was against the demand of statehood for North Karnataka and favoured a unified Karnataka.
Addressing a rally here on Monday, he said that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has not meted out injustice on the people of the NK region.
However, he expressed unhappiness with the CM’s statement that since the people of South Karnataka had voted for his party, he was implementing more schemes for that region. Mr. Bellubbi said the CM should not have said this as it would not go down well with the people of NK.
Mr. Bellubbi said that instead demanding division, it was appropriate to seek more funds and schemes for improving the socio-economic condition of this region.
Echoing similar sentiments, Siddanagouda Patil, State General Secretary, CPI, said that division of the State was not the solution for the development of this region. However, asserting that North Karnataka was still lagging behind in development compared to South Karnataka, he blamed successive CMs for this. He accused leaders such as Umesh Katti of playing politics of convenience over statehood for NK.
“When in power, they never raise this issue, but when they are in the Opposition, they start demanding separate statehood for NK,” he alleged .
