Biometric attendance is likely to be introduced for faculty and post-graduate students of dentistry across India from 2019, according to Dibyendu Mazumder, president, Dental Council of India (DCI), who delivered an endowment oration on ‘Dentistry in Changing Times’ at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute here on Saturday.

The Medical Council of India was also considering the DCI’s proposal for a three-year bridge course for Bachelor of Dental Surgery graduates, a press release said. There is also a proposal to start a one year fellowship programme for MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) doctors in any specialty.

The Dental Council of India has also proposed to grant a three-year jump to those who pursue Ph.D. in their own MDS specialty, under which they can be promoted as a Reader after one year as lecturer.

The recently-introduced rule that no new dental college would be sanctioned if it is not affiliated to a medical college was being strictly implemented, he said.
