Detroit-born Dhulipala Sanjana was the cynosure of all eyes as she paid for transporting 100 senior citizens with poor vision to hospital on Doctors’ Day.
Enrolled as a clinical volunteer with a not-for-profit missionary institution for ophthalmic care near Guntur, the 16-year-old Telugu girl raised $ 4,000 during summer vacation to transport the elderly requiring cataract surgery at a camp by Sankara Nethralaya at Ramasamyplli village near Mahimalur in Nellore district.
Having just completed 10th grade at Northville in the United States, she returned to her native place and motored down to the village, where her maternal grandfather stays with a team of doctors. Before reaching there, she spread the word that a team would be visiting and that those requiring treatment would be transported at her expense.
”I want to study medicine”, she said, after the day-long camp, adding that the identified patients would undergo intraocular lens transplant for cataract treatment.
