A large number of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadre, including women, staged demonstrations in three places in the district on Friday to protest against the hike in property tax in the State.
The agitation, organised by the Salem Central district unit of the party, was held in front of the Collectorate here. R. Rajendran, MLA, led the protest. The cadre raised slogans condemning the steep hike in property tax and demanded its roll back. The leaders, who spoke highlighting the demand, said that the steep hike would hit all sections of society. T. M. Selvaganapathy, former Minister, among others participated.
The Salem west district unit of the DMK staged the agitation in front of the municipal office in Edappadi and it was led by S. R. Sivalingam, its district secretary. A. Raja, in-charge of the DMK east district unit, led the demonstration held in front of the municipal office in Attur.
The DMK cadre staged the protests in three places in the district on Friday. The protest organised by the party’s Namakkal east district unit was held in front of the Anna statue in the town and it was led by S. Gandhiselvan, former Union Minister. S. K. Moorthy, MLA, led the demonstration held in front of the municipal office in Tiruchengode. The cadre also staged agitation in front of the municipal office in Rasipuram town.
The cadre staged demonstrations in Krishnagiri and Hosur. In Krishnagiri, DMK cadre led by party MLA T.Seguttuvan protested outside the municipal office. In Bargur, and Kaveripattinam, the cadre gathered outside the town panchayat offices and demanded the roll back of the tax hike. Similarly, in Hosur, the cadre led by Thally MLA Y.Prakash staged a demonstration.
The cadres led by district functionaries staged a protest demonstration outside Dharmapuri municipal office. It was led by Dharmapuri MLA Thadagam Subramani. Similarly, protests were held outside the town panchayat offices in Karimangalam, Marandahalli, Pennagaram, Paaparapatty, Palacode and Kambainallur, among other places.
The cadre of the Communist Party of India (CPI) too staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate on Friday condemning the steep hike in property tax and demanded the government to withdraw the same. A. Mohan, district secretary of the party, led the agitation. A. Arumugam and Sangeetha, both State council members, A. Vimalan, district secretary of the AITUC, participated in the demonstration.
