Shajahan of the Congress, wife of Mandya Urban Development Authority president Munavar Khan, was elected president of the Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC), on Monday. She defeated Suneetha Ravindra of the Janata Dal (Secular).
While Ms. Shajahan secured 30 votes, Ms. Ravindra polled only three votes. Ms. Shajahan will be in office for the next two months, Congress party sources said.
The election was necessitated following the death of Hosahalli Boregowda, a senior Congress leader in the CMC.
Assistant Commissioner M.R. Rajesh (Mandya Revenue subdivision), CMC Commissioner T.N. Narasimha Murthy and others were present.
