Breaking his silence on the BJP’s allegations that he called the Congress a “Muslim party”, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday that his party stood with “the persecuted and the last person in the line”.

Since Thursday last, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been attacking Mr. Gandhi after
Inquilab
, an Urdu daily, published a report quoting him as having described the Congress as a Muslim party at a meeting with eminent citizens from the community.

Erasing hatred

“I stand with the last person in the line. The exploited, marginalised and persecuted. Their religion, caste or beliefs matter little to me. I seek out those in pain and embrace them. I erase hatred and fear. I love all living beings. I am the Congress,” Mr. Gandhi wrote on Twitter.

For close to a week now, the Congress and the BJP have sparred over the news report.

The Congress called it fake news and accused the Prime Minister of spreading “hatred and dividing the people in the name of religion.”
