Aanayoottu (feeding of elephants) and the Ashtadravya Mahaganapathy homom ritual, meant for propitiating Lord Ganesha, were held at the Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple here on Tuesday under the auspices of the Vadakkunnathan Kshetra Kshema Samithi.

Around 60 elephants participated in the Aanayoottu. Thousands of devotees as well as elephant lovers, including women and children, thronged at the Thekkinkadu maidan to witness the ritual and to have a glimpse of the elephants.

Temple melshanti (chief priest) Payyappilly Madhavan Namboodiri inaugurated the event by offering rice balls to the youngest elephant Variyath Jayarajan. Elephants were given rice laced with jaggery, turmeric and ghee.

They were also given plantain, pineapple, cucumber, sugarcane, corn, and watermelon.

Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar, councillor M.S. Samboorna, and Assistant Collector Renu Raj were present at the function.

The function was insured for Rs. 1 crore.

A feast was also served for 5,000 devotees.

Double Thayambaka by Porur Unnikrishnan and Sukapuram Dileep was also held.
