CPI State assistant secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy on Tuesday sought immediate steps to prevent ‘pollution by the fertilizer plant owned by the Coromandel International in Malkapuram area’.

He told reporters here that the capacity of the plant had gone up from 700 tonne to 1,000 tonne (phosphoric acid) per day. However, he claimed that the plant was producing 1400 tonne per day.

Mr. Murthy said groundwater contamination in the neighbourhood had become a concern after the plant expanded its capacity.

He said people living in the surrounding areas were agitated over unabated pollution.
