The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council meeting on Monday witnessed pandemonium with the Congress and BJP members trading charges over distribution of funds under the 14th Finance Commission.
Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy raised the issue and alleged disparity in distribution of funds to Assembly constituencies with BJP MLAs. He cited the alleged ‘step-motherly’ treatment to north Karnataka while making his claims. “What crime have we done? There already is a clamour from citizens of north Karnataka for a separate state… likewise, segregate all BJP constituencies and form a separate corporation,” he charged.
‘Don’t politicise funds’
Several Congress councillors took objection to this. Former mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy said there should not be any politics in the demand for funds, and claimed that he had earmarked several crores for the development of Bommanahalli constituency when he was the mayor.
Yelahanka MLA S.R. Vishwanath also lamented about unequal fund distribution. “Let Congress MLAs have a hearty meal; give us (BJP MLAs) at least an Indira Canteen meal,” he said, alluding to funds.
Members of both Congress and BJP traded charges and stormed the well.
Mayor R. Sampath Raj assured the MLAs of discussing the issue with Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, who is also city in-charge.
BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said funds have been used to provide drinking water to the 110 villages in the BBMP limits, building underground drainage, and improving roads.
