The social literacy centres set up by the Scheduled Tribes Development Department for education of children in tribal settlements have received good response.

Nearly 150 tribal children attend the centres set up in five tribal areas. These include Valipara in Kuttichal panchayat, Puravimala in Amboori, Thannimuttu in Peringamala, Thalathutthukavu in Vithura, and Podiyakala. There are 30 children in each centre.

Though children mostly attend schools, there are no facilities like tuitions or libraries to increase their knowledge. It was against this backdrop that the government started the learning centres. Students returning from schools are given snacks and given night classes so that the centres function as alternative schools. One full-time teacher has been appointed to the centres. Computers with Internet facility and library draw the children to the centre.

A review of the project launched in January has shown good progress in children’s educational development, ITDP project officer C. Vinod Kumar said. There are 100 social literacy centres in the State.
