A 27-year-old man from Govandi was arrested on Wednesday for stalking a 17-year-old college student and assaulting her.

According to the CBD Belapur police, Vijay Rana Gohil, an auto driver, had been stalking the complainant from her residence in Nerul till college for the last one year. “Till a few years ago, the complainant stayed at Govandi and hence the accused knew her. The complainant then shifted to Nerul and joined a college in Belapur. The girl had repeatedly warned Mr. Gohil, but he kept coaxing her to speak to him,” an officer from CBD Belapur police station said.

On Tuesday, when the girl was on her way home from college, the accused approached her.

“He threatened to assault her if she did not speak to him, and when there was no response, he started abusing her and snatched her phone and threw it,” the officer said.

Girl narrates ordeal

The girl rushed home and narrated the ordeal to her family after which a complaint was lodged with the CBD Belapur police.

The accused was arrested under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354D (stalking), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
