No Chief Minister in the country has lied so brazenly to push a project that has not had a single farmer’s consent as my public hearings have shown, said Anbumani Ramadoss to
The Hindu
on the concluding day of his public hearing with affected farmers of the proposed Salem-Chennai green corridor project here in Harur on Tuesday.

Meeting over 2,000 farmers from 10 villages in Harur, the Dharmapuri MP said that farmers willing to commit self-immolation than to part with their land.

Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss raised questions on the economic relevance of the project. The Vaniyambadi – Tirupathur – Uthangarai – Harur – Manjavadi – Ayothiyapattinam – Salem route was declared a national highway last year. “I travelled along the route and mapped the proposed green corridor, which runs parallel to this newly declared NH for about 80 km. and cuts through it in many places,” Dr. Ramadoss said.

According to him, the project is effectively between Salem to Padappai, which is 35 km. from Chennai.

Also challenging the CM’s claims on the projected vehicular traffic as a rationale for the project, Dr. Ramadoss said the current traffic through Ulundurpet toll gate was 29,000 vehicles. But NHAI norms demand a traffic of 80,000 vehicles to embark on a 8-lane project.

He said party has proposed to move the court challenging the project.
