Handloom activist Prasanna Heggodu has said that the State government should hand over the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) to weavers organisations as it has failed to run it successfully. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Mr. Heggodu said that the mismanagement of KHDC has turned it into a white elephant.
Earlier, the government was providing Rs. 30 crore annual grants for the KHDC. However, no money has been allocated in this year’s budget. When KHDC was set up in 1975, it was providing livelihood to more than 40,000 families, he said.
At present, it is serving nearly 10,000 families and most of the grants are salary contingent. If the KHDC is handed over to weavers, it is possible to make it a profit-making unit, he said.
He said that the Akhil Karnataka Kaimagga Nekar Sangh has decided to stage a State- wide protest demanding fulfilment of various demands, including allocation of funds to the corporation.
The Sangh’s State unit president Vittappa Goranti, N.J. Malvade, Suresh Ganamuki, and Nagappa Bannigidad were present.
