The Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday heard arguments in a petition filed by some students stating that they were losing seats in medical colleges under reserved category due to misinterpretation of a High Court order.

The counsel for the petitioners V. Ramchander Goud submitted to the division bench headed by V. Ramasubramanian that considerable number of students belonging to Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes lost seats in medical colleges this year as the order was misinterpreted. The lawyer said parts of the GO 550 issued earlier by Andhra Pradesh Government was stayed by the HC last year.

The order was issued after some students belonging to Other Castes moved the HC stating that seats vacated by meritorious candidates belonging to reserved category were being filled only by the students of the communities concerned and this affected in maintenance of 50:50 quota for merit and reserved candidates. The HC made it clear that 50% merit quota should not be reduced.

The counsel argued that students belonging to BC, SC and ST were losing seats due to misinterpretation of the order by some officials. The arguments would continue today (Thursday).
