Minister for IT, BT, Science and Technology K.J. George inaugurated the ESDN/VLSI Incubation Centre at KLE Technological University here on Tuesday.
The centre is another initiative by KLE Technological University (KLETU), which has been playing a major role in building an entrepreneurial ecosystem in north Karnataka. Together with the Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services and the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association, the facility has been set up.
The centre is expected to help startups in the field of Electronic System Design Manufacturing (ESDM) and Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI). At present, a large portion of the ESDM and VLSI market is served by Indian companies.
‘A good sign’
Lauding the initiative, Mr. George termed it an “unusual development” where good-spirited people had come together to inspire young minds to bring about change. He said the birth of a large number of startups in a tier II city like Hubballi was a good sign for industrial development. “Although the region is lagging behind, the coming together of industry and academia will create an ecosystem that will lead to growth,” he said.
Recalling the contributions of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his advisor Sam Pitroda in bringing about the electronic revolution, the Minister said the country might have missed the earlier industrial revolution but was now competing with developed countries in the field of IT and electronics.
Vice-Chancellor of KLETU Ashok Shettar said the Centre for Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship that was established by the university in 2012 had emerged as a very successful campus incubation model across India by incubating over 40 successful technology startups. He said the incubation centre would also work towards creating skilled manpower.
