Noted Islamic scholar and senior Mujahid leader Cheriyamundam Abdul Hameed Madani, 74, has died at his house at Puthantheru, near Tanur, on Monday. He had been ailing for the past several months.

Author of many books, including the complete translation of Quran, Hameed Madani had commanded respect in the Muslim community as a towering Islahi scholar.

He has been the chief editor of the Shabab weekly for many years. A schoolteacher by profession, Hameed Madani had dedicated his life for the growth of the Islahi movement in the State. He worked as Khateeb (preacher) at several mosques in the State. His unflinching faith in the Mujahid ideology did not distance him from other Islamic groups.

People from different walks of life visited his house on Monday.

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala expressed grief at his passing. He will be buried at the Puthantheru Juma Masjid graveyard after funeral prayers at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. He is survived by wife and six children.
