A joint operation against illegal dyeing units in the city concluded with the authorities sealing the two remaining units near the Outer Ring Road in Bogadi here on Thursday.

With this, eight such units that were polluting their surroundings with hazardous discharge have been sealed in the operation carried out jointly by the Revenue Department, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, and the Mysuru City Corporation over a week.

Tahsildar Ramesh Babu, accompanied by environment officer B.M. Prakash, sealed the two units in Bogadi. When the KSPCB team and the police raided these units recently, there were some machines inside. Thanks to the week-long crackdown, the people behind such illegal businesses had taken away the machinFseiery used in colouring garments when the authorities went to seal the premises.

Mr. Prakash said the board would not let anybody polluting the environment escape and would crack down on erring establishments as it did on the dyeing units that were allegedly sourcing materials from neighbouring States.

He advised the locals not to join hands with anyone coming forward to establish illegal units on their properties since they would also get booked under various laws. “Knowingly or unknowingly, they will get caught in the criminal act,” he said.

The KSPCB said the operation against illegal dyeing units was one of the biggest crackdowns on establishments polluting the surroundings. “Further action based on FIRs will be taken,” he said.
