The Rotary Club of Madurai West honoured R. Kavya, Madurai’s First Woman Flying Instructor holding a commercial flight licence, here on Friday. She received a ‘Career Competence Award’ for her feat.

“I am honoured. This effort required support from many people, particularly family, friends and teachers. Money is just a small component that hindered me but it was the moral support that I sought the most. I am glad that these people believed in me,” she said. She added that the Government Flying Training School, Bengaluru, awarded this licence for the first time in 21 years.

Ms. Kavya also received a Flight Radio Telephone Operator’s Licence from the training school and she hopes to be an instructor.

The club also hosted a discussion titled ‘Nation where to’ with Major General V. Sadasivam as the main speaker. The speaker covered topics including Indo-China relationships, Aadhar cards, Mudra Scheme and India’s trajectory in the global sphere.

Speaking of Ms. Kavya’s achievement, he said “This young woman could have given up many times because of several hindrances but she chose not to. I am glad she has taken it up to train future instructors and motivate youngsters”.
