A domestic help working at Chinchpokli, who allegedly fled after stealing her employer’s cash and valuables worth Rs. 42.80 lakh, was arrested within six hours of the crime being reported, the police said on Tuesday.

The accused, Tuktuki Sheikh, was working for a family staying in Shantikamal Society for the past year. Her employers registered a complaint against her, alleging that she had stolen from them and gone missing, the Kalachowky police said.

“Acting on the theory that she might try to flee to her native place — Veerbhumi district in West Bengal — we dispatched teams to all major railway stations and bus depots from where she could exit the city,” an officer said.

The police teams scanned all entry and exit points into the city in coordination with the Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force and arrested Ms. Sheikh and her husband on Monday evening at Kalyan railway station. They revealed during questioning that they had decided to lay low for a few hours and then take a taxi from Chinchpokli to Kalyan, to take the first train to West Bengal.

“Almost all stolen goods were recovered. The accused were produced in court on Tuesday and have been remanded in police custody till July 28,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) N. Ambika said.
